9 General Description:
10 This bill authorizes the Public Service Commission to implement area code
11 conservation methods and a geographic split when an area code is exhausted.

26 Be it enacted by the Legislature of the state of Utah:
27 Section 1. Section 54-8b-7.1 is enacted to read:
28 54-8b-7.1. Commission review of new area code -- Area code conservation --
29 Geographic split.
30 (1) The commission shall develop and implement area code conservation methods to
31 preserve an existing area code.
32 (2) Subject to Subsection (1) and in accordance with 47 U.S.C. Sec. 251, the
33 commission shall implement a geographic area code split when an area code is exhausted.
34 (3) An area code that takes effect after the effective date of this section shall be subject
35 to Subsection (2).
36 Section 2. Effective date.
37 If approved by two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, this bill takes effect
38 upon approval by the governor, or the day following the constitutional time limit of Utah
39 Constitution Article VII, Section 8, without the governor's signature, or in the case of a veto,
40 the date of veto override.
41 Section 3. Revisor instructions.
42 It is the intent of the Legislature that, in preparing the Utah Code database for
43 publication, the Office of Legislative Research and General Counsel shall replace the reference
44 in Subsection 54-8b-7.1 (3) from "after the effective date of this section" with the bill's actual
45 effective date.
