9 LONG TITLE
10 General Description:
11 This joint resolution of the Legislature designates May 2009 as Utah Lions Club
12 Eyesight Preservation Month.
13 Highlighted Provisions:
14 This resolution:
15 . designates May 2009 as Utah Lions Club Eyesight Preservation Month; and
16 . urges Utahns to increase their awareness of the causes of vision loss and how it can
17 be prevented and treated.

21 Be it resolved by the Legislature of the state of Utah:
22 WHEREAS, approximately 47,000 Americans lose their sight each year even though
23 50% of all vision loss is preventable or treatable;
24 WHEREAS, over 400 eye tissue transplants are performed annually, with many more
25 people on waiting lists;
26 WHEREAS, each year, Lions Clubs throughout Utah conduct numerous vision
27 screening clinics, furnish eyeglasses for the needy, pay for cataract operations for the needy,
28 collect used eyeglasses for recycling, and raise awareness on vision-saving issues like diabetes,
29 glaucoma, organ and tissue donation, and general eye health;

30 WHEREAS, the Moran Eye Center, Friends for Sight, the Organ Donor Registry, the
31 Utah Foundation for the Blind, the Utah Lions Foundation, the Utah Lions Eye Bank, and
32 many other sight-related entities are recognized for their diligent work in combating vision
33 loss; and
34 WHEREAS, citizens are encouraged to become more aware of the causes of vision loss
35 during the month of May and throughout the year:
36 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of the state of Utah
37 designates May 2009 as Utah Lions Club Eyesight Preservation Month in the state of Utah
38 and joins the Lions Clubs of Utah in urging Utahns to increase their awareness of the causes of
39 vision loss and how it can be prevented and treated.
40 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be sent to the Utah Lions
41 Foundation.
