VETERANS DAY JOINT RESOLUTION

7 LONG TITLE
8 General Description:
9 This joint resolution of the Legislature urges public schools and communities
10 throughout the state to provide opportunities for the youth of the state to gain a greater
11 appreciation for the past and present service and sacrifice of the men and women of the
12 United States Military.
13 Highlighted Provisions:
14 This resolution:
15 . recognizes the past and present sacrifices of the men and women of the United
16 States Military who willingly stood, and currently stand, in harm's way to protect
17 the freedoms enjoyed by all who live in the United States of America;
18 . urges Utah's public schools to consider ways that they can provide opportunities,
19 whether through school assemblies, guest speakers in classes, or other activities, for
20 the youth of the state of Utah to have kindled within them an increased appreciation
21 and gratitude for the sacrifices made for them by their fellow Utahns who have
22 served, and continue to serve, in the various branches of the United States Military;
23 and
24 . urges cities and counties throughout the state to consider ways to enhance the honor
25 they show to the veterans among their citizenry for their service and sacrifices on
26 behalf of their fellow countrymen.

30 Be it resolved by the Legislature of the state of Utah:
31 WHEREAS, from the Revolutionary War to the present day, the contributions made to
32 the United States of America by her citizen soldiers who stand in our place to defend the
33 freedoms we enjoy cannot be calculated;
34 WHEREAS, the cost of their service frequently includes long separations from family,
35 the horror of combat, the deep loneliness, the agonizing and lingering effects of physical and
36 emotional injury, and for some, the ultimate price, their lives;
37 WHEREAS, even today, members of the military are stationed in Iraq, Afghanistan,
38 and many other places throughout the world, while their families remain in our communities;
39 WHEREAS, families hoping for the safe return of loved ones experience life in a very
40 different way than others, as their everyday thoughts and feelings never stray far from those
41 they honor and cherish;
42 WHEREAS, although Veterans Day deeply impacts a vast majority of Utahns, the
43 significance of what the day represents should merit greater understanding among Utah's youth;
44 WHEREAS, members of various veterans groups in the state would welcome the
45 opportunity to celebrate and educate Utah's youth through school assemblies, guest speaking in
46 classes, and activities such as parades in communities throughout the state that would form the
47 minds of Utah's youth on the ideals of sacrifice, service, love of country, and gratitude for those
48 who have served and continue to serve in the military around the world;
49 WHEREAS, just a few years ago, veterans of World War I were a focal point of many
50 local parades;
51 WHEREAS, it will not be long before World War II veterans are no longer with us, yet
52 their legacy of service should be woven into the character of our communities; and
53 WHEREAS, involving school-aged youth in Veterans Day activities is a key step in
54 increasing the sense of gratitude that Utah's youth, and all of its citizens, should feel towards
55 these individuals who have given so much that we might have the peace and freedom to pursue
56 the American Dream for ourselves and our loved ones:
57 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of the state of Utah
58 recognizes the past and present sacrifices of the men and women of the United States Military,

59 who willingly stood, and currently stand, in harm's way to protect the freedoms enjoyed by all
60 who live in the United States of America.
61 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Legislature urges Utah's public schools to
62 consider ways that they can provide opportunities, whether through school assemblies, guest
63 speakers in classes, or other activities, for the youth of the state of Utah to have kindled within
64 them an increased appreciation and gratitude for the sacrifices made for them by their fellow
65 Utahns who have served, and continue to serve, in the various branches of the United States
66 Military.
67 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Legislature urges cities and counties
68 throughout the state to consider ways to enhance the honor they show to the veterans among
69 their citizenry for their service and sacrifices on our behalf.
70 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be sent to the Utah State
71 Board of Education, the Utah League of Cities and Towns, the Utah Association of Counties,
72 the Utah Department of Veteran's Affairs, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Department Utah, the
73 Utah Office of Education, and the Utah State Board of Education.
