             8      General Description:
             9          This joint resolution of the Legislature recognizes the accomplishments and
             10      contributions of Steve Appleton to Utah's economy, its reputation as a high tech center,
             11      and its higher education efforts.
             12      Highlighted Provisions:
             13          This resolution:
             14          .    recognizes the accomplishments of Steve Appleton and his many contributions to
             15      Utah's economy, Utah's reputation as a high tech center, and to the advancement of
             16      science, technology, engineering, and math education in Utah.
             17      Special Clauses:
             18          None
             19     
             20      Be it resolved by the Legislature of the state of Utah:
             21          WHEREAS, Steve Appleton died Friday, February 3, 2012 in an airplane accident;
             22          WHEREAS, Steve Appleton was noted for his leadership of America's last remaining
             23      semiconductor memory manufacturer Micron Technology (Micron), serving as chief executive
             24      officer, president, and chairman for most of the period between 1994 and the present;
             25          WHEREAS, Steve Appleton was instrumental in Micron choosing to build a
             26      state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Lehi in 1995;
             27          WHEREAS, Steve Appleton was responsible for building one of Utah's most important


             28      technology companies, IM Flash Technologies, a joint venture between Micron and Intel, with
             29      headquarters in Lehi, in 2006;
             30          WHEREAS, Steve's tremendous support for IM Flash was highly influential to its
             31      success;
             32          WHEREAS, Micron and Intel have invested over $4.5 billion in IM Flash, one of the
             33      largest private sector investments in Utah history;
             34          WHEREAS, IM Flash has gone from zero market share to about 18% market share
             35      today;
             36          WHEREAS, IM Flash has been recognized as the most innovative memory process
             37      technology in the world, being the first to ship 20 nanometer flash memory products;
             38          WHEREAS, IM Flash generates from its products more than $2 billion in revenue per
             39      year for its parent companies;
             40          WHEREAS, IM Flash contributes between 20-30% of Utah's exports, outside of the
             41      primary metals sector;
             42          WHEREAS, IM Flash employs about 1,600 people in Utah with about $100 million per
             43      year in payroll; and
             44          WHEREAS, in 1999 Steve Appleton established the Micron Foundation, which has
             45      donated millions of dollars to engineering programs at the University of Utah, Utah State
             46      University, and Brigham Young University, to technician programs at other Utah institutions of
             47      higher education, and to science and math programs in Utah's public education system:
             48          NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of the state of Utah
             49      recognizes the accomplishments of Steve Appleton and his many contributions to Utah's
             50      economy, Utah's reputation as a high tech center, and to the advancement of science,
             51      technology, engineering, and math education in Utah.
             52          BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be sent to the Appleton
             53      Family, IM Flash Technologies, Micron Technology, the Micron Foundation, Intel, and the
             54      Governor's Office of Economic Development.
