             17      LONG TITLE
             18      General Description:
             19          This concurrent resolution of the Legislature and the Governor recognizes Israel's legal,
             20      historical, and moral right of self-governance and self-defense.
             21      Highlighted Provisions:
             22          This resolution:
             23          .    commends Israel for its cordial and mutually beneficial relationship with the United
             24      States and with the state of Utah;
             25          .    expresses support for Israel in its legal, historical, and moral right of
             26      self-governance and self-defense upon its own lands; and
             27          .    recognizes that Israel is not an attacking force of other nations, and that peace can
             28      be afforded the region only through combined efforts and trust.


             29      Special Clauses:

             32      Be it resolved by the Legislature of the state of Utah, the Governor concurring therein:
             33          WHEREAS, the Jewish people have a long standing connection to the land of Israel;
             34          WHEREAS, the claim and presence of the Jewish people in Israel has remained
             35      constant throughout the past 4,000 years;
             36          WHEREAS, Israel declared its independence and self-governance on May 14, 1948,
             37      with the goal of reestablishing a homeland for the Jewish people;
             38          WHEREAS, the United States, having been the first nation to recognize Israel as an
             39      independent nation and as Israel's principal ally, has enjoyed a close and mutually beneficial
             40      relationship with Israel and her people;
             41          WHEREAS, Israel is the greatest friend and ally of the United States in the Middle East
             42      and the two countries enjoy strong bonds and common values;
             43          WHEREAS, there are those in the Middle East who, since the time of Israel's inception
             44      as a state, have continually sought to destroy Israel;
             45          WHEREAS, Israel and the United States have similar goals of democracy and stability
             46      in the Middle East; and
             47          WHEREAS, Utah and Israel have enjoyed a cordial and mutually beneficial
             48      relationship since 1948, a friendship that continues to strengthen with each passing year:
             49          NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of the state of Utah, the
             50      Governor concurring therein, commend Israel for its cordial and mutually beneficial
             51      relationship with the United States and with the state of Utah.
             52          BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Legislature and the Governor express support
             53      for Israel in its legal, historical, and moral right of self-governance and self-defense upon its
             54      lands.
             55          BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Legislature and the Governor recognize that
             56      Israel is not an attacking force of other nations, and that peace can be afforded the region only


             57      through combined efforts and trust.
             58          BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be sent to the Embassy of
             59      Israel to the United States, the President of the United States, the Majority Leader of the United
             60      States Senate, the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, and the members of
             61      Utah's congressional delegation.
