9 General Description:
10 This bill provides for data collection on military children in public schools.
11 Highlighted Provisions:
12 This bill:
13 . requires public schools or school districts to collect data on whether a student has a
14 parent connected to the military and report the data to the state superintendent of
15 public instruction; and
16 . requires the state superintendent of public instruction to record the data on military
17 children in the automated decision support system.

26 Be it enacted by the Legislature of the state of Utah:
27 Section 1. Section 53A-1-1004 is enacted to read:
28 53A-1-1004. Data collection on military children in public schools.
29 (1) As used in this section:
30 (a) "Active duty military-connected student" means a student who is claimed as a
31 dependent on a tax return of a member of the United States Armed Forces assigned to active
32 duty in Utah.
33 (b) "Other military-connected student" means a student who is claimed as a dependent
34 on a tax return of a member of:
35 (i) a reserve component of the United States Armed Forces assigned to Utah; or
36 (ii) the Utah National Guard.
37 (2) Beginning with the 2014-2015 school year, when a public school enrolls a student
38 or completes an annual registration process, the public school or school district shall collect
39 data on whether a student is:
40 (a) an active duty military-connected student; or
41 (b) an other military-connected student.
42 (3) A public school or school district shall report the data described in Subsection (2)
43 to the state superintendent of public instruction.
44 (4) The state superintendent of public instruction shall record the data reported in
45 Subsection (3) in the automated decision support system described in Subsection
46 53A-1-301 (3)(e).
