9:10 a.m.  2.    Alignment of Public and Higher Education with Economic Development Goals

and Workforce Needs

One of the task force’s duties is to make recommendations on the alignment of both public education and higher education with the state’s economic development goals and workforce needs. The Department of Workforce Services and the Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce will describe methods of forecasting the number and types of occupations and the educational demand corresponding to those occupations.

11:15 a.m.       3.  State Education Effort and Student Achievement in Utah and Peer States

Mr. Kroes will review the findings of research conducted by the Utah Foundation regarding trends in Utah’s public education funding effort and a comparison of student achievement in Utah and states that share similar demographic characteristics.

11:45 a.m.         4.  Student Achievement as Measured by Internationally Administered Tests

The performance of U.S. students and those of other nations on internationally administered tests will be reviewed. The potential performance of Utah students on internationally administered tests may be inferred based on Utah’s performance relative to the national average on the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP).

Task force chairs have invited education stakeholders to share with the task force their perspectives on the key elements contributing to high student achievement and how to design an education system that promotes or enhances those elements.
