Increased costs to the courts for additional hearings and trials are estimated at $28,000 per year. Additional costs to the Department of Corrections for offenders on probation and extended probation due to upgrades in the offense catagories are estimated at $1,500 in FY 2000, $4,500 in FY 2001, and $7,500 per year thereafter. Supervision fees collected from the offenders and deposited to the General Fund would offset the Department of Corrections' supervision costs. Net costs to the State will be $3,000 in FY 2000 and $3,000 in FY 2001. By making offenses a Class A misdemeanor, the jurisdiction shifts from the Justice Courts to the District Court. Fee revenue from cases shifted to the District Courts would be approximately $25,000. There will be concuurent savings to local courts in caseload reduction and a loss of fee income at the local level of $25,000.
