While most of these cases will already go to court on other charges, some additional court time may be required. Any costs at this level can be absorbed by the courts. It is estimated that this change in the law could lead to additional convictions with prison time each year. However, the Analyst estimate is based on 3 additional convictions. Corrections costs would go up $60,000 in the first full year and escalate each year thereafter for 7 years.
