HB0298S01 - Motor Vehicle Safety Inspection Amendments

State Government (UCA 36-12-13(2)(b)):
Enacting this bill will eliminate the vehicle safety inspection fee, reducing dedicated credit revenue to Public Safety by about $1.4 million and reducing revenue to the Transportation Fund by about $2.3 million beginning in FY 2014. Registration fees will increase by $1.75 per vehicle, generating about $1.3 million in revenue for the Transportation Fund Restricted - Public Safety Account and $2.5 million in revenue for the Transportation Fund beginning in FY 2014.

Enacting this bill likely will not result in direct, measurable costs for local governments.

Direct Expenditures by Utah Residents and Businesses (UCA 36-12-13(2)(d)):
Enacting this bill will save certain individuals $17 per safety inspection, much of which would be a revenue reduction to safety inspection businesses. Beginning in FY 2014, individuals will not pay a $2.00 inspection fee, saving a total amount of $3.7 million. Individuals will instead pay $1.75 per vehicle per year more in registration fees for a total cost of $3.8 million.
