The department operates and manages the Utah Veterans' Cemetery and Memorial Park in Bluffdale. Responsibilities include coordinating burials, arranging services, assisting families in obtaining burial benefits from the United States VA, and all related services that are provided in the normal operation of a cemetery. A veteran with a discharge of any type other than dishonorable is allowed to be buried here, at no expense to the family.
The cemetery provides for nearly 500 funeral arrangements each year.
Interments
The Veterans' Cemetery conducted 353 interments in FY 2013, 394 in FY 2014, and is on track for 450 in FY 2015.
UCA 71-7-3(1): The Department of Veterans' and Military Affairs, in consultation with the Veterans' Memorial Park Board, shall develop, operate, and maintain a veterans' cemetery and memorial park.
Cemetery revenues come from three distinct revenue sources:
- Federal payments under the Federal Burial Allowance Program (CFDA 64.101)
- Private payments for family burials not eligible for federal benefits
- State appropriations
