Dear Legislator,
I’m writing to thank you for your continued support of the Beverley Taylor Sorenson Arts Learning Program, and urge you and other legislators to continue funding the program at its current level and structure. Having a full time music teacher of the caliber that the BTS program funds is unique and something I use as a point of pride to talk about my charter school experience. I understand that there is some discussion in the Session this year that while the $19,445 million is secured, the model of funding it at an 80/20 model with schools providing some of the funding for each educator may change. I have been told by administrators of the program that a change away from that model would seriously impact the number of students the program can reach, and I don’t want it to leave the school in my area. I truly believe that music is part of a well-rounded student and value its role in my school. A greater understanding and appreciation of music is key in helping students understand Social Studies, which I teach. I believe that it is very important to do everything we can to keep the arts in our schools, and the BTS Program is a great example of how beneficial the arts can be when they are integrated into education. Not only do the arts help improve academic learning, but they also play a significant role in positively impacting students’ overall wellbeing and personal growth. Please make sure you fund it at the level it has been the last few years. Please continue your support and do not make changes that will hurt our kids.
