Eating right for your genes

Your genes not only decide what you look like, they also decide what foods are best for you. Many chronic diseases including cardiovascular disease, hypertension, obesity, and type 2 diabetes are diet-related. Eating wrong for your genes increases your chances of having these health problems.

A good example is the relationship between the APOE gene and fat. The APOE gene is a major player that influences cholesterol level in your blood. High cholesterol is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease. There are three common types of the APOE gene. Your body reacts differently to fat depending on which type you have:

  1. APOE2: lower levels of cholesterol
  2. APOE3: normal cholesterol metabolism
  3. APOE4: higher risk for high cholesterol than most people
