Dear Senator Weiler:
Today there are more than 60,000 Utahns who can't access any affordable health care because they don't earn enough to get a subsidy on the health insurance marketplace. Our state has made an enormous investment of time and money to study this problem and to find a Utah solution. It is time for our state to move forward with a plan to provide access to this care through a Medicaid expansion. If Utah does not expand Medicaid, thousands will continue to delay important health care decisions. Failure to receive needed health care can lead to enormous costs for both the patient and health care providers. These costs are then passed on to all Utahns in the form of increased premiums and higher taxes.
Expanding Medicaid is not only good for the health of Utahns, it will also return money to Utah that Utahns have paid in taxes, bring $2.3 billion into the state over the next ten years through economic growth and create more than 3,000 new jobs. The expansion will cut costs to state public assistance programs and generate new tax revenue that could help fund important priorities like public education and transportation. There is nothing but good to come from Medicaid expansion, both financially and from a humanitarian viewpoint. Rarely do those two come together. When they do, we should jump at the chance!
It is time to move forward with a Utah solution for those without any access to affordable care in our state. I urge you to support an expansion of Medicaid.
Thank you for your consideration.
