Dear Senator Weiler,
I am very concerned about the appearance of sexism and partisan politics playing out on the stage of the agenda of judicial nominations. The article in todays Salt Lake Tribune, by Robert Gehrke, indicated that Ms. Margaret Plane, an eminently talented and experienced lawyer, having served as American Bar Association commissioner, Salt Lake City attorney under two mayors, Park City attorney, and honored as lawyer of the year by the Women Lawyers of Utah, is being denied a hearing for her nomination to the Utah Court of Appeals. The Utah Constitution explicitly prohibits discrimination and goes on to note, “Selection of judges shall be based solely upon consideration of fitness for office, without regard to any partisan political consideration.” It would seem that the best way to serve the constituents of this great state is to appoint judges of exceptionally high quality from diverse backgrounds. I am very interested to understand your rational for denial of the hearing and would appreciate a response. Likewise, I would hope you and your fellow Judiciary Committee members would consider adding Ms Plane to the agenda. Ms. Plane deserves the courtesy of a hearing and hopefully, approval of nomination. Thank you. Sincerely, Judith Zimmerman Registered Republican Woman
