5    AN ACT RELATING TO PUBLIC EDUCATION; INCREASING THE ANNUAL
6    COMPENSATION FOR STATE SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS FROM $1,500 TO $3,000
7    AND THE ANNUAL COMPENSATION CEILING FOR LOCAL SCHOOL BOARD
8    MEMBERS FROM AN AMOUNT NOT TO EXCEED $1,500 TO AN AMOUNT NOT TO
9    EXCEED $3,000; AND PROVIDING AN EFFECTIVE DATE.
10    This act affects sections of Utah Code Annotated 1953 as follows:
11    AMENDS:
12         53A-1-202, as last amended by Chapter 56, Laws of Utah 1992
13         53A-3-202, as last amended by Chapter 56, Laws of Utah 1992
14    Be it enacted by the Legislature of the state of Utah:
15        Section 1. Section 53A-1-202 is amended to read:
16         53A-1-202. Compensation for services -- Additional per diem -- Insurance --
17     Certified statements of expenses.
18        (1) Each member of the State Board of Education shall receive [$1,500] $3,000 per year,
19    payable monthly, as compensation for services, in addition to necessary travel expenses.
20        (2) Each member may receive additional per diem compensation as established by the
21    director of the Division of Finance for attendance at meetings or activities related to any business
22    of the board, not to exceed 12 per year.
23        (3) Board members may participate in any group insurance plan provided to employees
24    of the State Office of Education as part of their compensation on the same basis as required for
25    employee participation.
26        (4) The state superintendent shall certify statements of actual and necessary travel
27    expenses incurred by board members in attending board meetings or performing duties authorized


1    by the board.
2        Section 2. Section 53A-3-202 is amended to read:
3         53A-3-202. Compensation for services -- Additional per diem -- Insurance --
4     Approval of expenses.
5        (1) (a) Each member of a local school board, except the student member, [receives] shall
6    receive an amount not to exceed [$1,500] $3,000 per year, payable monthly, as compensation for
7    services.
8        (b) Members shall also receive compensation for necessary expenses on the same basis
9    as members of the State Board of Education.
10        (c) The board shall determine the exact amount under this statutory guideline.
11        (2) Each member may receive, as approved by the board, additional per diem
12    compensation equal to that established for state board members under Section 53A-1-202 for
13    attendance at meetings and activities related to any business of the local school board, not to
14    exceed 12 per year.
15        (3) Board members may participate in any group insurance plan provided to employees
16    of the school district as part of their compensation on the same basis as required for employee
17    participation.
18        (4) Each member shall submit an itemized account of necessary travel expenses for board
19    approval.
20        Section 3. Effective date.
21        This act takes effect on July 1, 1997.
