FORAGE INITIATIVE

    AN ACT RELATING TO HIGHER EDUCATION; PROVIDING A $225,000
    APPROPRIATION TO CONTINUE THE UTAH PASTURE AND FORAGE INITIATIVE,
    A RESEARCH AND EDUCATION PROJECT DESIGNED TO IMPROVE OPEN SPACES
    AND TO ASSIST LIVESTOCK PRODUCERS TO IMPROVE IRRIGATED PASTURE
    PRODUCTION; AND PROVIDING AN EFFECTIVE DATE.
    This act enacts uncodified material.
    Be it enacted by the Legislature of the state of Utah:
        Section 1. Appropriation.
        (1) There is appropriated from the General Fund for fiscal year 1998-99, $225,000 to Utah
    State University to be used by the Utah Agricultural Experiment Station as matching funds for a
    federal grant to continue the Utah Pasture and Forage Initiative, a research and education project
    designed to improve open spaces and to assist livestock producers to improve irrigated pasture
    production.
        (2) The university shall use the appropriation under the initiative for concurrent research
    and education projects for livestock production on irrigated pastures appropriate to the needs and
    conditions faced by Utah agricultural producers.
        (3) (a) For fiscal year 1999-2000 and for each fiscal year thereafter, the State Board of
    Regents shall include a requested line item appropriation to fund the Utah Pasture and Forage
    Initiative.
        (b) The appropriation requests shall continue for only as long as matching funds are made
    available by the federal government.
        Section 2. Effective date.
        This act takes effect on July 1, 1998.
