             6      AN ACT RELATING TO EDUCATION; PROVIDING A $99,000 APPROPRIATION TO
             7      SOUTHERN UTAH UNIVERSITY TO ASSIST IN FUNDING THE ACTIVITIES OF ITS
             8      CEDAR MOUNTAIN SCIENCE CENTER; PROVIDING THAT THE CENTER SHALL USE
             9      THE APPROPRIATION FOR ACTIVITIES RELATED TO THE DEVELOPMENT AND
             10      IMPLEMENTATION OF CURRICULUM THAT FOCUSES ON BALANCED, INTEGRATED,
             11      INTERDISCIPLINARY ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION; AND PROVIDING AN
             12      EFFECTIVE DATE.
             13      This act enacts uncodified material.
             14      Be it enacted by the Legislature of the state of Utah:
             15          Section 1. Appropriation.
             16          (1) There is appropriated from the General Fund for fiscal year 2000-01 only, $99,000 to
             17      Southern Utah University to help fund the activities of its Cedar Mountain Science Center,
             18      hereafter referred to as the "center."
             19          (2) The center shall use the appropriation to:
             20          (a) coordinate the development of an upper elementary and middle school environmental
             21      education strategy that broadens the scope and quality of state education through a balanced,
             22      comprehensive, unbiased, and multidisciplinary approach to the study of environmental issues;
             23          (b) provide a professional development program at the center that will allow teachers to
             24      develop and implement curriculum which focuses on an integrated, interdisciplinary study of the
             25      natural world and its relationship to economics and the community;
             26          (c) offer and evaluate pilot programs, primarily at middle schools, that focus on integrated,
             27      interdisciplinary environmental education; and


             28          (d) pilot a residential science summer camp for students.
             29          (3) The university shall closely monitor the activities of the center and report its findings
             30      to the Legislative Education Interim Committee prior to November 30, 2000.
             31          (4) The money appropriated in Subsection (1) is nonlapsing.
             32          Section 2. Effective date.
             33          This act takes effect on July 1, 2000.
