5 AN ACT RELATING TO PUBLIC SCHOOLS; REQUIRING LOCAL SCHOOL BOARDS TO
6 LIMIT OR REDUCE THE SIZE OF CORE SUBJECT CLASSES IN HIGH SCHOOL; AND
7 PROVIDING AN EFFECTIVE DATE.
8 This act affects sections of Utah Code Annotated 1953 as follows:
9 ENACTS:
10 53A-3-402.2, Utah Code Annotated 1953
11 Be it enacted by the Legislature of the state of Utah:
12 Section 1. Section 53A-3-402.2 is enacted to read:
13 53A-3-402.2. Class size reduction for high school core subject courses.
14 (1) It is the intent of the Legislature that class size for core subject courses in the state's
15 public high schools not exceed 28 students.
16 (2) Each local school board shall structure its core subject class sizes in high school as
17 follows:
18 (a) Beginning with the 2000-01 school year, if the size of a core subject class exceeds 28
19 students, the class shall be reduced in size by two students per year from the previous year's class
20 size, unless a reduction of one student achieves the 28-student level.
21 (b) Subsection (2)(a) shall apply for five consecutive years or until the core class size is
22 no more than 28 students, whichever occurs first.
23 (c) Local school boards are encouraged to reduce their class sizes under Subsections (2)(a)
24 and (b) even further if resources are available to make further reductions.
25 (3) In accordance with Title 63, Chapter 46a, Utah Administrative Rulemaking Act, the
26 State Board of Education shall make a rule that defines what constitutes a core subject at the high
27 school level.
28 Section 2. Effective date.
29 This act takes effect on July 1, 2000.
