             5      This act appropriates S [ $4,400,000 ] $5,000,000 s from the Uniform School Fund for fiscal
             5a      year 2001-02 to
             6      the State Board of Education for distribution to public school teachers for classroom
             7      supplies and materials. The act takes effect on July 1, 2001.
             8      This act enacts uncodified material.
             9      Be it enacted by the Legislature of the state of Utah:
             10          Section 1. Appropriation.
             11          (1) There is appropriated from the Uniform School Fund for fiscal year 2001-02,
             12      S [ $4,400,000 ] $5,000,000 s to the State Board of Education for distribution to public school teachers
             12a      for classroom
             13      supplies and materials.
             14          (2) The board shall distribute the appropriation directly to classroom teachers through the
             15      state's 40 school districts on the basis of the number of classroom teachers in each public school
             16      as compared to the total number of classroom teachers in the 40 school districts.
             17          (3) (a) Each teacher in grades kindergarten through six shall receive up to $225 and each
             18      teacher in grades seven through 12 shall receive up to $175 from the appropriation.
             19          (b) Teachers shall spend the money for school supplies, materials, or field trips under rules
             20      adopted by the State Board of Education.
             21          (4) As used in this section:
             22          (a) "Public schools" and "school districts" include the Schools for the Deaf and the Blind,
             23      the Edith Bowen Laboratory School, and applied technology centers.
             24          (b) "Teachers" mean permanent teacher positions filled by one teacher or two or more
             25      job-sharing teachers who are licensed personnel, paid on the teacher's salary schedule, and hired
             26      for an entire contract period, and whose primary function is to provide instructional or a
             27      combination of instructional and counseling services to students in the public schools.
             28          Section 2. Effective date.
             29          This act takes effect on July 1, 2001.
