H.B. 216 Enrolled
This act provides a $500,000 appropriation to fund an Advanced Readers at Risk Program
in the public schools to develop advanced reading knowledge and skills in students. This act
takes effect on July 1, 2001.
This act enacts uncodified material.
Be it enacted by the Legislature of the state of Utah:
Section 1. Appropriation.
(1) There is appropriated from the Uniform School Fund for fiscal year 2001-02 only,
$500,000 to the State Board of Education to fund an Advanced Readers at Risk Program in the
state's public schools.
(2) The purpose of the program is to develop advanced reading knowledge and skills in
students through model classrooms, parental involvement, and coordinated service projects.
(3) The program shall run at least three years, subject to reauthorization by the Legislature
based on an evaluation of the effectiveness of the program.
(4) The board shall allocate the appropriation to school districts based on submission of
grant applications and assurances of and compliance with qualifying criteria established by the
state board pursuant to its rulemaking authority.
(5) The appropriation is in addition to the appropriation for accelerated learning programs
made under Section 53A-17a-120 as part of the Minimum School Program Act.
Section 2. Effective date.
This act takes effect on July 1, 2001.
