RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING
SESQUICENTENNIAL OF OGDEN CITY
2001 GENERAL SESSION
STATE OF UTAH

This joint resolution of the Legislature recognizes the Sesquicentennial of Ogden City. The
resolution encourages former and current citizens of Ogden and all citizens of Utah to join
in celebrating the sesquicentennial.
Be it resolved by the Legislature of the state of Utah:
WHEREAS, in August 1847 a group of Mormon scouts, including Captain James Brown,
visited a small fort on the Weber River built by Miles Goodyear, a fur trapper, and found the first
buildings built by a white man in what was to become the state of Utah;
WHEREAS, Brigham Young instructed Captain Brown to purchase the fort and the
surrounding lands;
WHEREAS, the fort, which consisted of several buildings, a land area of 400 square miles,
cattle, goats, sheep, and a $10 cat, were purchased from Miles Goodyear by Captain Brown with
funds from the Mormon Battalion for $1,950;
WHEREAS, a new Mormon colony, called Brownsville, was established at this location;
WHEREAS, in 1849 Brigham Young visited the area and recommended the layout of a
community which he called Ogden, named after Peter Skene Ogden, a Hudson Bay fur trapper;
WHEREAS, on February 8, 1851, less than five years after the initial purchase of the area,
the Territorial Legislature incorporated the City of Ogden as a legal entity;
WHEREAS, from this beginning the citizens of Ogden, as well as a group of courageous,
wise, and progressive leaders and entrepreneurs with foresight and tenacity, have built a beautiful
and diverse community where agriculture, railroading, and industrial technology have maintained
and strengthened a regional economy;
WHEREAS, the residents of Ogden are proud of their colorful and diverse heritage, honor
the past, celebrate the present, and anticipate a bright and promising future; and
WHEREAS, the Ogden Sesquicentennial Committee has scheduled a variety of events and

activities for the 150th anniversary year of Ogden City:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of the state of Utah recognizes
the Sesquicentennial of the City of Ogden and encourages former and current citizens of Ogden and
the citizens of Utah to join in celebrating this important anniversary.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Legislature expresses its best wishes for Ogden
City's successful year-long celebration.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be sent to Ogden City.
