6 This act provides a $500,000 appropriation to fund an Advanced Readers at Risk Program
7 in the public schools to develop advanced reading knowledge and skills in students. This act
8 takes effect on July 1, 2001.
9 This act enacts uncodified material.
10 Be it enacted by the Legislature of the state of Utah:
11 Section 1. Appropriation.
12 (1) There is appropriated from the Uniform School Fund for fiscal year 2001-02 only,
13 $500,000 to the State Board of Education to fund an Advanced Readers at Risk Program in the
14 state's public schools.
15 (2) The purpose of the program is to develop advanced reading knowledge and skills in
16 students through model classrooms, parental involvement, and coordinated service projects.
17 (3) The program shall run at least three years, subject to reauthorization by the Legislature
18 based on an evaluation of the effectiveness of the program.
19 (4) The board shall allocate the appropriation to school districts based on submission of
20 grant applications and assurances of and compliance with qualifying criteria established by the
21 state board pursuant to its rulemaking authority.
22 (5) The appropriation is in addition to the appropriation for accelerated learning programs
23 made under Section 53A-17a-120 as part of the Minimum School Program Act.
24 Section 2. Effective date.
25 This act takes effect on July 1, 2001.
