RESOLUTION CALLING FOR SUPPORT OF
2 THE PRINCIPLES OF THE ALLIANCE FOR
3 UNITY
4 2002 GENERAL SESSION
5 STATE OF UTAH

7 This joint resolution of the Legislature expresses support for the principles h [ espoused by
8 Utah's Alliance for Unity ] of respect, understanding, and inclusiveness of all people h . The
8a resolution urges an increase in respect and understanding
9 of differences among Utahns and a greater determination to cross boundaries of culture,
10 religion, and ethnicity to better understand and befriend one another.
11 Be it resolved by the Legislature of the state of Utah:
12 WHEREAS, the Alliance for Unity is endeavoring to increase the level of respect and
13 understanding among the diverse citizens of Utah;
14 WHEREAS, Utah is a community rich in resources, ideas, hopes, capabilities, and heritage,
15 and its people have various political, religious, and other beliefs;
16 WHEREAS, many groups in Utah, including the Legislature, seek to foster a more unified
17 community where varying viewpoints are acknowledged and valued, differences are aired, and
18 problems are solved in an atmosphere of courtesy, respect, and civility;
19 WHEREAS, respecting differences brings unity and health to communities;
20 WHEREAS, the Utah Legislature supports seeking ways to bring people and
21 neighborhoods together for the benefit of all, and pledges to encourage specific projects of
22 common purpose;
23 WHEREAS, the Utah Legislature invites all Utahns to join in the long-term, ongoing
24 endeavor to bring all people together for the common good;
25 WHEREAS, political parties can play a significant role in encouraging respect for differing
26 viewpoints in an atmosphere of courtesy, respect, and civility; and
27 WHEREAS, by supporting opportunities for people with differences to understand and

28 appreciate one another, Utahns will bring added honor to the state's heritage as a symbol of
29 tolerance and freedom:
30 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of the state of Utah
31 expresses support for the principles h [ espoused by the Alliance for Unity ] OF RESPECT,
31a UNDERSTANDING, AND INCLUSIVENESS OF ALL PEOPLE h and urges the citizens of
32 Utah to address their differences with one another in a spirit of increased respect and
33 understanding.
34 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the citizens of Utah seize the opportunity to join with
35 those of differing religious, political, and cultural affiliations in identifying common challenges
36 and working together to solve them.
37 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be sent to the Alliance for
38 Unity and to each political party registered in h [ the ] h Utah.
