7 This concurrent resolution of the Legislature and the Governor recognizes the outstanding
8 contributions of Congressman James V. Hansen to the citizens of Utah. The resolution
9 recognizes his 40 years of service to the state, including 22 years in the United States House
10 of Representatives.
11 Be it resolved by the Legislature of the state of Utah, the Governor concurring therein:
12 WHEREAS, Congressman Hansen is a native northern Utahn and graduate of the
13 University of Utah;
14 WHEREAS, Congressman Hansen's contributions to the state began with great enthusiasm
15 and a desire to accomplish much good for the citizens of Utah;
16 WHEREAS, Congressman Hansen served in the United States Navy during the Korean
17 War;
18 WHEREAS, prior to his election to the Utah Legislature, he served in local government
19 as a three-term city councilman in Farmington;
20 WHEREAS, beginning his state legislative service in 1972, Congressman Hansen brought
21 the needs of those in the small corners of Utah to the attention of the entire state as he worked
22 tirelessly to address the needs of his constituents;
23 WHEREAS, Congressman Hansen served eight years in the Utah Legislature, the last two
24 as Speaker of the House of Representatives;
25 WHEREAS, in 1980 he was elected to the United States Congress;
26 WHEREAS, as a representative in the United States Congress, Congressman Hansen rose
27 in seniority to important leadership positions on critical committees;
28 WHEREAS, Congressman Hansen served for 14 years on the Ethics Committee, one of
29 the longest terms on that body in the history of the United States House of Representatives;
30 WHEREAS, during his tenure as Chairman of the Resources Committee, Congressman
31 Hansen frequently went to great lengths to bring together opposing opinions on contentious and
32 complex issues;
33 WHEREAS, Congressman Hansen has long been a champion for reasonable use and access
34 to public lands and has fought to protect the rights and interests of rural Utahns for over two
35 decades;
36 WHEREAS, Congressman Hansen was an ardent defender of Hill Air Force Base, which
37 remains in full operation due to his relentless courage, determination, and optimism;
38 WHEREAS, Congressman Hansen was a strong voice for a sound energy policy, and his
39 work in this crucial area will continue to be of great worth to the nation;
40 WHEREAS, with his seniority in the United States House of Representatives, his expertise
41 and his solid reputation, Congressman Hansen's resignation as a member of the United States
42 Congress will be a great loss to the state;
43 WHEREAS, on Utah's Capitol Hill, Congressman Hansen is regarded as honorable,
44 objective, keenly interested in the common good, and as the epitome of collegiality;
45 WHEREAS, Congressman Hansen never compromised his belief in a limited government,
46 a robust free enterprise, and in strong national armed services;
47 WHEREAS, in a recent survey Congressman Hansen was listed as the tenth most powerful
48 member of the United States House of Representatives; and
49 WHEREAS, Congressman Hansen's service to America and the state is distinguished by
50 exuberance, commitment to excellence, willingness to tackle any challenge, a spirit of goodwill,
51 and above all, absolute integrity:
52 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of the state of Utah, the
53 Governor concurring therein, recognize the outstanding service Congressman James V. Hansen
54 has rendered to the citizens of Utah.
55 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Legislature and the Governor wish Congressman
56 Hansen and his family the very best, and praise them for their many sacrifices to serve the nation,
57 and especially Utah.
58 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be presented to Congressman
59 Hansen.
