SCHOOLS IN UTAH

             7      This joint resolution of the Legislature expresses support for the achievements and efforts
             8      of the Utah Academic Decathlon, with support from Utah communities, school districts,
             9      businesses, and Dixie State College. This resolution recognizes the commitment of these
             10      entities to promoting competitive academic excellence, recognizes and encourages all
             11      Utah high schools in their efforts to pursue academic achievements, expresses leadership
             12      support for competitive excellence among individuals and schools in Utah, and expresses
             13      appreciation to Dixie State College for its efforts over the past 20 years in running the
             14      Utah Academic Decathlon and for representing the state of Utah at the United States
             15      National Academic Decathlon.
             16      Be it resolved by the Legislature of the state of Utah:
             17          WHEREAS, competitive academic achievement in Utah should be promoted and
             18      supported;
             19          WHEREAS, Academic Decathlon teams are fielded from throughout the state of Utah;
             20          WHEREAS, many local businesses and communities have shown their support of
             21      Academic Decathlon teams;
             22          WHEREAS, Academic Decathlon teams should solicit support and sponsorship from
             23      their local community and establish partnerships with area businesses;
             24          WHEREAS, for 20 years Dixie State College has provided leadership and support to
             25      the Utah Academic Decathlon and represents the state of Utah at the United States National
             26      Academic Decathlon;
             27          WHEREAS, students with exceptional achievements in the areas of speech, language



             28      and literature, essay, science, technology, mathematics, social science, art, and music compete
             29      in the decathlon and are deserving of valued recognition;
             30          WHEREAS, hundreds of Utah educators and volunteers devote time, energy, and
             31      expertise to promote self worth through educational achievements to expand horizons; and
             32          WHEREAS, the Utah Legislature acknowledges the need for collaborative efforts from
             33      businesses, the community, and the state to support competitive academic excellence:
             34          NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of the state of Utah
             35      recognizes and supports the efforts of the Utah Academic Decathlon to encourage excellence
             36      among high school students who represent their schools at the regional, state, and national
             37      level.
             38          BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Legislature recognize the leadership and
             39      support that Dixie State College has provided to the Utah Academic Decathlon.
             40          BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Legislature recognizes and encourages
             41      additional business partnerships aimed at supporting scholastic recognition of all successes in
             42      competitive academic events.
             43          BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Legislature recognizes, honors, and encourages
             44      Utah high school students in their efforts to pursue both personal and competitive
             45      achievements in all areas of study.
             46          BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be sent to the Utah State
             47      System of Higher Education, the Utah State Board of Regents, the Utah State Office of
             48      Education, the Utah Education Association, and to the Board of Trustees of Dixie State
             49      College.
