The meeting was called to order by Chair Evans at 4:45 p.m.

1. Approval of Minutes

MOTION:
Sen. Hellewell moved to approve the minutes of 2-24-04.

The motion passed unanimously with Sen. Hatch absent at the time of the vote.

2. H.B. 126, Teacher Classifications (Rep. R. Bigelow)

Rep. Ron Bigelow presented the bill.

MOTION: Sen. Wright moved to pass H.B. 126, Teacher Classifications out with a favorable recommendation.

The motion passed unanimously with Sen. Hatch absent at the time of the vote.

3. 1st Sub. H.B. 22, Civic and Character Education in Schools (Rep. L. Christensen)

Rep. LaVar Christensen presented the bill and distributed a handout. Lillian Garrett, spoke in support of the bill as a concerned citizen. Katie Mahoney, a student, spoke to the bill.

MOTION:
Sen. Hellewell moved to pass 1st Sub. H. B. 22, Civic and Character Education in Schools out with a favorable recommendation.

The motion passed unanimously with Sen. Hatch absent at the time of the vote.



4.
H.B. 113, Nonresident Tuition Waiver for Job Corps Students (L. Shurtliff)

Sen. Evans announced that H.B. 113, Nonresident Tuition Waiver for Job Corps Students would not be heard at the request of the sponsor.

5. H.B. 100, School Professional Development Days (Rep. B. Last)


Rep. Bradley G. Last presented the bill. Geoffrey Leonard, Utah Employees Association and Gary Cameron, Utah School Superintendents and School Boards Association, and JoAnn Neilson, Utah PTA President, spoke in support of the bill.

MOTION: Sen. Hatch moved to amend H.B. 100, School Professional Development Days with the following amendments:


1.    Page 2, Lines 41 through 42

The motion passed unanimously.

MOTION: Sen. Hatch moved to pass H.B.100, School Professional Development Days out with a favorable recommendation as amended.

The motion passed with Sen. Jenkins voting in opposition.

MOTION: Sen. Wright moved to adjourn.

The motion passed unanimously.

The meeting adjourned at 5:14 pm.
