             8      General Description:
             9          This bill provides for additional high school curriculum provisions.
             10      Highlighted Provisions:
             11          This bill:
             12          .    provides for the establishment of a rigorous postsecondary preparation curriculum
             13      for high school students;
             14          .    provides a method for parents and students to choose the postsecondary preparation
             15      curriculum; and
             16          .    encourages a meeting to select which curriculum the student will follow.

             25      Be it enacted by the Legislature of the state of Utah:


             26          Section 1. Section 53A-1-402.7 is enacted to read:
             27          53A-1-402.7. High school curriculum.
             28          (1) In accordance with Title 63, Chapter 46a, Utah Administrative Rulemaking Act, the
             29      State Board of Education shall make rules to:
             30          (a) establish a rigorous postsecondary preparation curriculum, in addition to the core
             31      curriculum required by Sections 53A-1-402 and 53A-1-402.6 ; and
             32          (b) require a school district to provide the postsecondary preparation curriculum
             33      options to all high school students, and allow a student and the student's parent or guardian to
             34      indicate in writing a preference for the student to pursue a specific postsecondary curriculum.
             35          (2) The State Board of Education shall encourage a school district to convene a
             36      meeting prior to or during a student's ninth grade year to discuss the best curriculum path based
             37      on the student's needs, involving:
             38          (a) the student;
             39          (b) the student's parent or guardian;
             40          (c) the student's teacher; and
             41          (d) any other appropriate school officials, including the principal and counselors.
