7 General Description:
8 This bill creates a tuition and books assistance program for adult education students.
9 Highlighted Provisions:
10 This bill:
11 . establishes an Adult Education Tuition and Books Reimbursement program to be
12 administered by the State Board of Education; and
13 . authorizes tuition and books reimbursement for recipients.

17 This bill takes effect on July 1, 2005.

22 Be it enacted by the Legislature of the state of Utah:
23 Section 1. Section 53A-15-406 is enacted to read:
24 53A-15-406. Tuition and books reimbursement and stipend -- Conditions --
25 Number of awards -- Administration.
26 (1) The State Board of Education shall award funds appropriated for the Adult
27 Education Tuition and Books Reimbursement program on a competitive basis to eligible adult
28 education students, based on criteria developed in accordance with this section.
29 (2) Award recipients shall receive a stipend after selection as an award recipient.
30 (3) Reimbursement awards shall cover adult education tuition and books, as
31 determined by, and subject to available funding and other conditions approved by the board.
32 (4) Each reimbursement award is valid for up to the period approved by the board.
33 (5) A reimbursement award may be canceled at any time by the board if the award
34 recipient fails to attend adult education.
35 (6) The board shall annually review the number of reimbursement awards to be
36 provided, based on the funds appropriated.
37 (7) Appropriated funds shall be held in a separate account until funds are distributed to
38 award recipients.
39 (8) The board shall administer the funds in accordance with criteria, policies, and
40 procedures established by the board.
41 Section 2. Effective date.
42 This bill takes effect on July 1, 2005.
