             7      LONG TITLE
             8      General Description:
             9          This resolution of the House of Representatives recognizes the efforts of the Utah
             10      Asthma Task Force and the American Lung Association of Utah to address problems
             11      caused by asthma.
             12      Highlighted Provisions:
             13          This resolution:
             14          .    recognizes the efforts of the Utah Asthma Task Force and the American Lung
             15      Association of Utah for their Open Airways Program; and
             16          .    recognizes the Utah Asthma Task Force and the American Lung Association of Utah
             17      for their efforts to improve asthma care, reduce the economic burden of asthma upon
             18      Utah communities, and eliminate preventable deaths caused by asthma.
             19      Special Clauses:
             20          None
             21     
             22      Be it resolved by the House of Representatives of the state of Utah:
             23          WHEREAS, the House of Representatives of the state of Utah recognizes that asthma is
             24      a debilitating disease that affects the quality of life of more than 200,000 Utahns;
             25          WHEREAS, asthma is a chronic condition where blocked or narrowed airways cause
             26      sufferers to experience coughing, chest tightness, and wheezing;
             27          WHEREAS, asthma can be effectively managed by simple prevention and control
             28      techniques, including properly using medications and avoiding cold or dry air, dust, pollen,
             29      pollution, cigarette smoke and other environmental triggers, and stress and physical activity;


             30          WHEREAS, asthma results in significant losses in worker productivity, health care
             31      resources, and school attendance;
             32          WHEREAS, Utah is suffering under the weight of rising treatment costs for asthma;
             33          WHEREAS, asthma is particularly devastating to children, causing one of every six
             34      pediatric emergency visits and ranking third among the causes of hospitalization for children
             35      under the age of 15;
             36          WHEREAS, the American Lung Association of Utah's Open Airways Program is
             37      designed to help children learn to manage their asthma, resulting in fewer sick days and less time
             38      in the emergency room;
             39          WHEREAS, asthma poses a significant health risk to a great many Utahns; and
             40          WHEREAS, the efforts of the Utah Asthma Task Force and the American Lung
             41      Association of Utah to educate the public about this ailment constitute a valuable public health
             42      service and are indeed worthy of commendation:
             43          NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the
             44      state of Utah recognizes the Utah Asthma Task Force and the American Lung Association of
             45      Utah for their Open Airways Program.
             46          BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the House of Representatives recognizes the
             47      efforts of the Utah Asthma Task Force and the American Lung Association of Utah to improve
             48      asthma care, reduce the economic burden of asthma upon Utah communities, and eliminate
             49      preventable deaths caused by asthma.
             50          BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be sent to the Utah
             51      Asthma Task Force and the American Lung Association of Utah.
