     LONG TITLE
     General Description:
         This joint resolution of the Legislature encourages the Governor to consider statewide
     geographic balance when making future gubernatorial appointments.
     Highlighted Provisions:
         This resolution:
         .    encourages the Governor to consider, among other factors, achieving an increased
     statewide geographic balance when determining membership in making future
     committee, board, and commission appointments.
     Special Clauses:
         None

     Be it resolved by the Legislature of the state of Utah:
         WHEREAS, participation in government by citizens from all regions of the state
     encourages understanding of the unique needs and perspectives of all citizens while also
     forging common bonds through public service;
         WHEREAS, there are many significant ways in which citizens from across the state
     contribute their time and effort for the betterment of Utah as a whole;
         WHEREAS, one way to recognize the significance of including citizens throughout the

     state in serving the public is through membership on state committees, boards, and
     commissions;
         WHEREAS, geographic representation, as reflected in the membership of these state
     entities, suggests that the varied perspectives of Utahns are heard and are recognized as playing
     an essential role in the development of public policy in Utah;
         WHEREAS, in some cases, the membership of state committees, boards, and
     commissions does not reflect the broad, geographic spectrum of the state of Utah;
         WHEREAS, the Legislature, in filling its appointments to state entities, has worked to
     reflect the varied geographic interests of the state; and
         WHEREAS, the citizens of the state benefit greatly as Utah's wide geographic range of
     interests and perspectives are included in the political process:
         NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of the state of Utah
     encourages the Governor to give added consideration to geographic balance when making
     future gubernatorial appointments to the state's committees, boards, and commissions.
         BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be sent to Governor
     Huntsman.
