34 General Description:
35 This concurrent resolution of the Legislature and the Governor recognizes the 100th
36 Anniversary of the Girl Scouts of the USA.
37 Highlighted Provisions:
38 This resolution:
39 . recognizes the 100th Anniversary of the Girl Scouts of the USA and expresses
40 appreciation for the leadership, self-esteem, and character building the organization
41 provides through its dedicated service to the girls and women of Utah.

45 Be it resolved by the Legislature of the state of Utah, the Governor concurring therein:
46 WHEREAS, on March 12, 1912, Juliette "Daisy" Gordon Low assembled 18 girls from
47 Savannah, Georgia for the first Girl Scout meeting;
48 WHEREAS, Juliette believed that all girls should be given the opportunity to develop
49 physically, mentally, and spiritually;
50 WHEREAS, since that time, Girl Scouts of the USA has become a recognized leader in
51 innovative development programs for girls and young women;
52 WHEREAS, since 1912, Girl Scouts of the USA has been helping girls build courage,
53 confidence, and character while developing skills that serve the common good;
54 WHEREAS, through Girl Scouting, girls discover their strengths as they explore their
55 world, connect with others to understand the needs of their community, and take action to make
56 the world a better place;

57 WHEREAS, on March 12, 2012, Girl Scouts of the USA will celebrate a legacy of 100
58 years of leadership, and has many exciting events planned to reflect Girl Scouts as the voice of
59 and for girls;
60 WHEREAS, the advent of this important milestone provides a unique opportunity to
61 not only reflect on the tremendous contributions the Girl Scouts of the USA have made over
62 the past 100 years, but also to rally support for the next century of Girl Scouting, both
63 nationwide and here in Utah;
64 WHEREAS, today, the Girl Scouts of the USA is the largest girl-serving organization
65 in the United States with 2.3 million girl members, 880,000 adult volunteers, 50 million
66 alumnae, and 112 councils nationwide;
67 WHEREAS, the rich diversity of our country is reflected in the multi-cultural mosaic of
68 Girl Scout membership;
69 WHEREAS, Girl Scouts are in schools, churches, temples, mosques, public housing,
70 foster homes, and detention centers;
71 WHEREAS, Girl Scouts are urban, suburban, rural, and in virtually every zip code;
72 WHEREAS, the Girl Scouts organization believes that one girl makes a difference, but
73 together girls are changing the world;
74 WHEREAS, the Girl Scouts of the USA boldly declared 2012 as the Year of the Girl
75 and renews its commitment to the education and well-being of today's girls;
76 WHEREAS, Girl Scouts urge the citizens of the state of Utah to help every girl of this
77 generation to reach her full potential wherever she lives, whatever challenges face her, and
78 however great the journey;
79 WHEREAS, the Girl Scouts of the USA urges the citizens of Utah to help close critical
80 gaps for girls in education, confidence, leadership, and to invest in girls today;
81 WHEREAS, Girl Scouts is open to all girls grades K-12, and a girl's experience can be
82 tailored to her unique interests;
83 WHEREAS, every Girl Scout adventure is designed to nurture each girl and encourage
84 personal growth through cutting-edge initiatives in environmental awareness and advocacy;

85 health and wellness; science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM); creative arts;
86 financial literacy and entrepreneurship; and leadership development;
87 WHEREAS, Girl Scouts of Utah serves the entire state with membership near 8,500
88 girls and 3,500 adult volunteers;
89 WHEREAS, local Girl Scouts provide more than 500,000 hours of service annually and
90 are a vital part of Utah communities;
91 WHEREAS, the official mission of Girl Scouts of Utah is to build girls of courage,
92 confidence, and character who make the world a better place;
93 WHEREAS, Girl Scouts of Utah provides a unique experience where a girl finds
94 courage by pushing past her perceived limitations to reach for her dreams, finds confidence by
95 discovering her strengths in a fun, girl-only, supportive environment, and where her character
96 is shaped by learning values that strengthen herself, her community, and her world;
97 WHEREAS, Girl Scout alumnae are living proof of their impact, as demonstrated by
98 the fact that 80% of women business owners, 69% of female United States senators, 67% of
99 female members of the House of Representatives, and virtually every female astronaut who has
100 flown in space, was a Girl Scout;
101 WHEREAS, for 100 years, Girl Scouts of the USA has done more than any other
102 organization to provide leadership opportunities for girls; and
103 WHEREAS, the 100th Anniversary Celebration of Girl Scouts of the USA is a
104 once-in-a-lifetime opportunity:
105 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of the state of Utah, the
106 Governor concurring therein, recognize the 100th Anniversary of the Girl Scouts of the USA,
107 and express appreciation for the leadership, self-esteem, and character building the
108 organization provides through its dedicated service to the girls and women of Utah.
109 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be sent to the Girl Scouts
110 of the USA and the Girl Scouts of Utah Council.
