             7      LONG TITLE
             8      General Description:
             9          This joint resolution of the Legislature urges families, communities, the education
             10      community, and the business community to work together to help meet the needs of
             11      people with a hearing impairment.
             12      Highlighted Provisions:
             13          This resolution:
             14          .    urges families, communities, the education community, and the business community
             15      to work together to find creative ways to help people, especially children, who have
             16      a hearing impairment to receive the help that they need to improve their chances of
             17      overcoming the social, educational, and economic barriers caused by hearing
             18      impairment.
             19      Special Clauses:
             20          None

             22      Be it resolved by the Legislature of the state of Utah:
             23          WHEREAS, a child with hearing loss faces many social and educational challenges;
             24          WHEREAS, a family helping a child with a hearing loss faces great economic
             25      challenges as it tries to find the help needed and cope with the financial consequences;
             26          WHEREAS, families, communities, the education community, and businesses, working
             27      together, can find solutions to these challenges;


             28          WHEREAS, possible solutions include giving hearing aids that are no longer needed by
             29      a person to a person in need, and providing educational programs tailored to the needs of
             30      people with a hearing impairment;
             31          WHEREAS, there is an urgent need to increase public awareness of challenges related
             32      to hearing loss, particularly among children;
             33          WHEREAS, the insurance community could consider ways to provide hearing aids to
             34      those families and individuals to whom they provide coverage;
             35          WHEREAS, community agencies could provide needed support to help meet the
             36      challenges faced by people with a hearing impairment; and
             37          WHEREAS, by bringing families, communities, the education community, and
             38      businesses together to face these challenges, vital progress can be made:
             39          NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of the state of Utah
             40      urges families, communities, the education community, and the business community to work
             41      together to find creative ways to assist children and others who have a hearing impairment to
             42      receive the help they need to overcome the social, educational, and economic barriers faced by
             43      people who have a hearing impairment.
             44          BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be sent to the Utah League
             45      of Cities and Towns, the Utah Association of Counties, the Utah Department of Health, the
             46      Utah Department of Human Services, the Utah Department of Insurance, and the Utah State
             47      Board of Education.
