             8      LONG TITLE
             9      General Description:
             10          This bill modifies the Nurse Practice Act by amending provisions for nursing education
             11      programs.
             12      Highlighted Provisions:
             13          This bill:
             14          .    requires that to qualify graduates for licensure, a nursing education program shall:
             15              .    be affiliated with an accredited institution of higher education and be accredited
             16      by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), the National
             17      League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC), or the Council on
             18      Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs (COA); or
             19              .    be approved by the board, or an equivalent agency in the state in which the
             20      nursing education program is offered, and comply with standards defined by
             21      division rules; and
             22          .    makes technical changes.

             26          This bill takes effect on January 1, 2013.

             31      Be it enacted by the Legislature of the state of Utah:
             32          Section 1. Section 58-31b-601 is amended to read:
             33           58-31b-601. Minimum standards for nursing programs -- Medication aide
             34      training.
             35          (1) [A] To qualify as an approved education program for the purpose of qualifying
             36      graduates for licensure under this chapter, a nursing education program shall:
             37          (a) (i) be affiliated with an [accredited] institution of higher education [in order to be
             38      approved by the division.] that is accredited by the:
             39          [(2) The minimum standards a nursing program shall meet to qualify graduates for
             40      licensure under this chapter shall be defined by division rule.]
             41          (A) Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools;
             42          (B) New England Association of Schools and Colleges;
             43          (C) North Central Association of Colleges and Schools;
             44          (D) Northwest Accreditation Commission;
             45          (E) Western Association of Schools and Colleges; or
             46          (F) Southern Association of Colleges and Schools; and
             47          (ii) be accredited by the:
             48          (A) Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education;
             49          (B) National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission; or
             50          (C) Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs; or
             51          (b) be approved by the board and comply with standards defined by division rules.
             52          (2) An approved education program described in Subsection (1), may offer its didactic
             53      courses using classroom, clinical, or online methods.
             54          (3) In accordance with Title 63G, Chapter 3, Utah Administrative Rulemaking Act, and
             55      the provisions of this chapter, the division shall make rules defining the minimum standards for
             56      a medication aide certified training program to qualify a person for certification under this


             57      chapter as a medication aide certified.
             58          Section 2. Effective date.
             59          This bill takes effect on January 1, 2013.
