             7      LONG TITLE
             8      General Description:
             9          This bill directs the Education Interim Committee to conduct a study of programs and
             10      initiatives to assist students at risk of academic failure.
             11      Highlighted Provisions:
             12          This bill:
             13          .    directs the Education Interim Committee in 2012 to study:
             14              .    programs and initiatives in the state and other states to assist students who score
             15      below proficient on assessments of academic achievement or are economically
             16      disadvantaged; and
             17              .    whether funding for the Carson Smith Scholarships for Students with Special
             18      Needs program is sufficient to meet the demand for scholarships.

             26      Be it enacted by the Legislature of the state of Utah:
             27          Section 1. Education Interim Committee study of programs to assist students at
             28      risk of academic failure.
             29          In 2012, the Education Interim Committee shall conduct a study of programs to assist
             30      students at risk of academic failure, including a study of:
             31          (1) the Carson Smith Scholarships for Students with Special Needs program to
             32      determine whether funding for the program is sufficient to meet the demand for the
             33      scholarships;
             34          (2) programs and funding to assist students in the state's public schools who score
             35      below proficient on assessments of academic achievement or are economically disadvantaged;
             36          (3) programs in other states to assist students who score below proficient on
             37      assessments of academic achievement or are economically disadvantaged; and
             38          (4) other initiatives to assist students at risk of academic failure.
