This bill appropriates $150,000 from the General Fund in FY 1998 to the Division of Wildlife Resources in the Department of Natural Resources. The bill authorizes compensation to be paid to the owners of damaged livestock when that damage is caused by a bear or mountain lion. The bill changes the current compensation rule of payment up from 50 percent of the fair market value of the damage to 100 percent. The Analyst assumes the appropriation would be ongoing. In the past, payments to applicants for compensation have been prorated, due to insufficient funding. The proration has made compensation available, but always at an amount below the maximum available to each applicant. It is estimated that the fiscal impact will be limited to the amount of the appropriation this bill carries.
