This bill requires the Department of Health to submit a request to the U.S. government to waive the requirement for a Medicaid fraud unit. This can be handled within existing budgets. However, a requirement for the waiver is showing how the state will pursue fraud in the absence of the fraud unit. To do this, the Department would need an appropriation of $770,000 funded from the General Fund ($385,000) and Federal funds ($385,000). This increase would be partially offset by the elimination of the current fraud unit, currently in the Department of Public Safety, but transferred to the Attorney General for FY 2001 as a result of action taken by the Executive Offices, Criminal Justice, and Legislature Appropriations Subcommittee. This amount would be $158,400 from the General Fund and $794,000 from Federal Funds.
