                      This concurrent resolution of the Legislature and the Governor recognizes the practice
                  and promotion of the Golden Rule.
                  Highlighted Provisions:
                      This resolution:
                      .    recognizes the practice and promotion of the Golden Rule as a commitment for the
                  common good; and
                      .    expresses a shared sense of duty to support and practice the Golden Rule and urges
                  all Utahns to live by it.
                  Special Clauses:
                      None

                  Be it resolved by the Legislature of the state of Utah, the Governor concurring therein:
                      WHEREAS, the Golden Rule, "do to others as you would have them do to you," is a
                  precept that has been shared around the world by many faiths and traditions for thousands of
                  years;
                      WHEREAS, varied expressions of this counsel form the essence of many world
                  religions, including Christianity, Buddhism, Islam, and Judaism;
                      WHEREAS, there are at least 108 different formulations of the Golden Rule taken from

                  different cultures, philosophies, and teachings;
                      WHEREAS, members of these faiths and traditions in Utah practice the Golden Rule in
                  their daily experiences;
                      WHEREAS, the Golden Rule Project of the Manners/Golden Rule Foundation was begun
                  in November 2003 with the goal of placing the Golden Rule in middle schools and high schools
                  in the local community in a manner that would attract the attention of students and encourage
                  consideration of the Golden Rule;
                      WHEREAS, these representations consist of 16 Golden Rule formulations taken from
                  different cultures, philosophies, and teachings, placed on a two-page, framed diptych;
                      WHEREAS, currently, Golden Rule diptychs have been placed in the Utah Museum of
                  Fine Art, West Jordan Middle School, West Jordan High School, Waterford School, Rowland
                  Hall St. Marks, Sorenson Multi-Cultural Center, Pingree School for Autistic Children, Odyssey
                  House Kearns High School, Judge Memorial High School, Crescent View Middle School,
                  Central High School, Butler Middle School, and Albion Middle School;
                      WHEREAS, various local artists contributed their time and talents to create unique
                  representations of the Golden Rule for each recipient school;
                      WHEREAS, currently, work is progressing on a Spanish-language translation of the
                  Golden Rule document to acknowledge the largest minority group in Utah, and the design of a
                  Golden Rule document intended for placement in elementary schools;
                      WHEREAS, groups who have contributed their time and resources during the initial
                  phase of the Golden Rule Project are the Utah Arts Council, the Utah Humanities Council, the
                  Midvale Boys and Girls Club, and the University of Utah Book Arts Program;
                      WHEREAS, the practice of the Golden Rule is especially important in relationships with
                  those who are less fortunate;
                      WHEREAS, the less fortunate include those who suffer from hunger; lack safe, decent,
                  accessible, and affordable housing; have no basic, quality health care; or are poor and
                  economically insecure;
                      WHEREAS, in the spirit of the Golden Rule it is incumbent upon all Utahns, including

                  public and private groups and churches and government entities, to ensure that the less fortunate
                  are treated justly and with compassion; and
                      WHEREAS, a growing number of faith-based groups, community organizations, and
                  individuals in Utah are pledging their duty, support, and practice of the Golden Rule:
                      NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of the state of Utah, the
                  Governor concurring therein, applaud the practice and promotion of the Golden Rule as a
                  commitment for the common good.
