Wildfire Risks and Mitigation
5a. Land Use Planning Tools to Reduce Wildfire Risk
Jamie Barnes, State Forester, Director, Division of Forestry, Fire, and State Lands, and Jason Curry, Deputy Director, Division of Forestry, Fire, and State Lands, gave an update on what the state is doing to mitigate wildfires in wildland urban interface areas and potential obstacles the state might face.
The committee asked questions of Jason Curry and Jamie Barnes.
Richard Snelgrove, Member, Salt Lake County Council, and Dea Theodore, Member, Salt Lake County Council, spoke on potential wildfire risks that face Big and Little Cottonwood Canyons.

Rep. Lyman moved to include culinary water, wildland urban interface issues, and updates to the State Fire Code in the existing committee bill file concerning management plans of canyons in the state. The committee discussed the motion further.

Sandall moved to place a period after "storage of water" on line 31 and delete "storm water, waste water, or sewage", adopt the draft legislation as a committee bill, and favorably recommend the amended draft legislation to the full Legislature for consideration during the 2023 General Session. The committee discussed the substitute motion further.
Sen. Hinkins moved to adjourn.
