The University Hospital line item is comprised of two programs - the University Hospital and the Miners' Hospital.
The University Hospital program provides funding for teaching faculty at the Hospital, while the Miners' Hospital is limited to providing healthcare for disabled miners. Additional detail is found in each of these two programs in the following pages.
During the 2015 General Session, the Legislature appropriated for Fiscal Year 2016, $5,290,400 from all sources for University Hospital. This is a 2.7 percent increase from Fiscal Year 2015 revised estimated amounts from all sources. The total includes $4,834,600 from the General/Education Funds, an increase of 2.9 percent from revised Fiscal Year 2015 estimates.
In addition to statewide compensation and internal service fund cost increases, the following appropriation adjustments were made during the 2015 General Session:
Patients Admitted, Net Patient Revenue, Outpatient Visits
The University Hospital annually admits over 30,000 patients, in addition to outpatient visits in various locations. Inpatient admissions have lagged behind projections for the last few years, which is reflective of a national trend to provide more care in an outpatient rather than inpatient setting. Annual revenue from patient fees has surpassed $1 billion, which reflects funds available to cover operating expenses, pay debt service, purchase capital equipment and provide support to the School of Medicine for education and research. Net patient revenue has grown over the past several years based on increased volumes as well as improvements in collections.
