The Utah Antidiscrimination and Labor Division (UALD) enforces equal employment and housing laws, as well as Utah's laws regarding payment of wages, employment of minors and minimum wage.
The division has an alternative dispute resolution program that manages a mediation program for all three units.
During the 2015 General Session, the Legislature appropriated for Fiscal Year 2016, $2,305,400 from all sources for Anti-Discrimination and Labor. This is a 6.6 percent increase from Fiscal Year 2015 revised estimated amounts from all sources. The total includes $1,515,800 from the General/Education Funds, a reduction of 0.1 percent from revised Fiscal Year 2015 estimates.
Number of Employment Discrimination Case Closures
This graph demonstrates the number of employment discrimination cases closed within a year. A key federal contract bases funding levels on this measure. Note: Numbers are based on the federal fiscal year, rather than the state fiscal year.
Number of Wage Claim Case Closures
One of the Division's goals is to reduce its backlog of cases. To achieve this goal, the Division must close more cases than it receives in a given year. At June 30, 2014 there were 1,116 cases open. It is estimated that it would take at least a full year to eliminate the backlog - if no new cases were added during that year.
Number of Housing Discrimination Case Closures
This graph demonstrates the number of housing discrimination cases closed within a year. This section enforces laws prohibiting discrimination in the renting, purchasing or financing of housing based on race, sex, disability, religion, color, national origin, familial status (families with children under 18) and source of income (government assistance).
The UALD budget breaks down into the following units:
- Employment Discrimination. Investigates, mediates, and resolves claims of employment discrimination
- Fair Housing. Investigates, mediates, and resolves complaints of housing discrimination
- Wage Claim. Administers labor laws for wage payment, employment of minors, and minimum wage.
